COSMOLEDO FISHING REPORT
The second half of January on Cosmoledo Atoll delivered a thrilling reminder of just how special this remote fishery truly is. Big giant trevally, defining personal milestones, technical flats fishing, and exciting blue water variety all came together to create an unforgettable period of fishing. Our anglers experienced everything from their first saltwater species to dream giant trevally over a meter, standout triggerfish, and rare, heart-racing permit moments. With a blend of spring-tide opportunity and hard-earned success, Cosmoledo once again lived up to its reputation as one of the most diverse and compelling atolls in the Indian Ocean.
Giant trevally were undeniably the headline act, producing both volume and serious size. Across the combined reports, 81 fish were landed, keeping anglers consistently engaged and tested. Several guests reached major personal milestones, including Craig and Scott, who both landed their very first giant trevally on fly, a shared moment that quickly became one of the standout highlights of the trip.
One of the defining fish of the period came from Elmer D, who realised a long-held goal by landing a truly exceptional 113 cm GT. After multiple visits to Cosmoledo with a single focus, Elmer’s perseverance paid off when the fish followed his fly up from deeper coral sections inside the lagoon before eating just metres from the boat. It was a powerful, unforgettable encounter and a moment that perfectly captured what makes Cosmoledo so special.
Triggerfish always add a technical and deeply satisfying dimension to flats fishing. Scott ticked off another species by landing his first moustache triggerfish. At the same time, Wesley finally achieved a long-awaited success after several trips to the Seychelles, landing an impressive 45 cm yellowmargin triggerfish.
The permit have made a good account of themselves this season, with Chris landing an exceptional 77 cm permit on the flats at Menai — the largest permit landed so far this season and one of the biggest ever recorded on Cosmoledo.
Blue water exploration added yet another layer of excitement. Pavel O and Dominika O dedicated much of their time to fishing in deeper channels and offshore. Their efforts were rewarded with an impressive mix of species, including African marble grouper, saddleback grouper, swallowtail grouper, multiple snapper species, bluefin trevally, and giant trevally. Their success underlined Cosmoledo’s versatility, where anglers can seamlessly shift between flats and blue water depending on conditions and ambition.
Across the weeks, Cosmoledo Atoll delivered unforgettable fishing moments, meaningful personal milestones, and an exceptional spread of species. First GT’s and metre-plus giants to rare permit and rewarding triggerfish, the atoll once again proved why it remains one of the most respected and sought-after destinations in saltwater fly fishing.
